Doctor Bios
Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Cvitanovich graduated from Jesit High School in 1978. He graduated from Tulane University in 1982 with a B.S. in Biology. Dr. Cvitanovich attended LSU Medical Center-New Orleans and graduated in 1986. In 1989, Dr. Cvitanovich completed his residency in Family Practice at Earl K. Long Hospital in Baton Rouge. He is currently Board Certified in Family Practice.
After Residency, Dr. Cvitanovich initially worked internationally as a Medical Officer for Norwegian Cruise Line and American Hawaii Cruise Line. In 1992, he became a Emergency Room Physician at East Jefferson General Hoapital, and was there until 2005. Dr. Cvitanovich was also Medical Director of the Wound Center at East Jefferson General Hospital, and served three years as a member of the Medical Executive Committee of East Jefferson General Hospital.
Dr. Cvitanovich is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
Dr. Cvitanovich is married, and has four children.
Dr. Luis Arencibia
Medical Director, East Jefferson After Hours Metairie
Dr. Luis Arencibia is the Medical Director of East Jefferson After Hours Metairie location.
Dr. Arencibia was born in Miami, Florida, and is a second-generation Cuban-American. He completed his Pre-Med requirements at Miami-Dade College, and also recieved a B.S. in Healthcare Administration.
Dr. Arencibia attended Medical School abroad, in Juarez Mexico and St Lucia, and trained clinically in Georgia and West Virginia. He graduated from Medical School in 2004, and was then accepted into the Family Practice Residency Program at East Jefferson General Hospital. Dr. Arencibia gained valuable experience at EJ during Katrina, and has since become certified in Basic Disaster Life Support.
He completed his Residency in June, 2008, and is Board Certified in Family Practice. Dr. Arencibia serves as a Clinical Instructor of Family Practice for the East Jefferson General Hospital Residency Program.
Dr. Cynthia L Swart Medical Director, East Jefferson After Hours Kenner
Dr. Swart is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr Swart completed a Residency in Family Practice at Mt Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She is Board Certified in Family Practice and has had the title of Fellow conferred by the American Academy of Family Practice. Her experience has included private practice, Urgent Care, and also, she has been the Medical Director of a Hospital Emergency Department.
Dr. Swart also has had multiple administrative duties throughout her career.
Dr. Jose Veras-Pola, MD
Dr. Jose Veras-Pola is originally from Santiago, Dominican Republic, where he graduated from "De La Salle" High School in 1988. He then attended Santiago's Pontifical Catholic University, graduating in 1994 from their Medical School. Dr. Veras-Pola served as a Research Physician/staff in Neurosciences at Columbia University in New York City. He completed an internship year at New York Medical College/St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady NY. He then joined the Family Medicine Program at East Jefferson Hospital, graduating in 2005. He is Board certified by the ABMS in Family Medicine.
He has served as support medical staff on numerous NGO's emergency/ambulatory medical care projects in Central America and the Caribbean. Dr. Veras-Pola joined EJAH formally in 2005, but came as a resident on all his junior/senior electives in 2003/2004. He is emergency department staff member of three major hospitals in two different states, is also Medical Staff at East Jefferson General and Ochsner-Kenner Hospitals. He currently holds a license to practice in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Dominican Republic.
